So this is happening…
Welcome to the first official Sociologie Blog, where I will be putting fingers to the keyboard to share with you my thoughts on some of my my favourite subjects; fashion, travel and books . I am Kate, owner of Sociologie, a women’s clothing store in Busselton WA. My store is located in an beautiful coastal town in the South West of WA and a few years ago I was lucky enough to turn my passion into a business. I have lived and worked in Busselton for 25 years. My first job was in Environmental Health for the Shire of Busselton, where I worked for 7 years until I had my girls. Once I had young children I realised that I had a strong desire to go into small business.
My first foray into business was opening a children’s store in Margaret River with my sister-in-law, called Kiss Chasey. My next business venture involved value adding milk we were producing on our dairy farm and turning it into gourmet ice cream with my close friend Sue. Two Fat Cows was born and our ice-cream brand enjoyed some moderate success in the South West and in Perth. After a few years, Sue and I made the difficult decision to sell Two Fat Cows as we wanted to pursue other individual business interests. I have always loved fashion and, in 2016, I I believed that there was a gap in the market in Busselton for classic, stylish quality clothing for older women.
OK, so don’t judge me too harshly – at least I will never die wondering…..I am always up for a challenge and yes – retail in Busselton has definitely not been a walk in the park! Despite these challenges, I love what I do and there is no better feeling than when you dress a customer and they look really lovely and feel so good about themselves. I also love interacting with my customers and having a some genuinely fascinating conversations. My staff are gorgeous, knowledgeable and are awesome with our customers.
I am constantly searching for interesting brands to stock. I am predominately looking for brands that offer value for money in the quality of the fabrication. I like brands that offer modern, timeless pieces that can be dressed up or down, worn to work or into the weekend. Most of my brands are designed and often made in Australia from natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, merino wool, silk, and cashmere.
My store aims to provide a carefully curated selection of clothing for women who like a classic style and who want to look like an individual, not the masses. Not too young but not too old either. A woman who is adventurous with fashion but is not governed by fashion trends. Someone who favours quality fabrication and classic styling. Investment pieces that will not date and are versatile enough to be worn many times over for many difference purposes.
